England and Wales Drought Persists Despite Week of February-Level Rainfall
Despite experiencing the most significant rainfall in a single week since early February, large swathes of England and Wales remain officially in drought. This recent precipitation, while substantial in isolated areas, has failed to reverse the prolonged dry spell that has depleted reservoirs and groundwater levels over recent months.
Water Restrictions Remain
Water utility companies have confirmed that hosepipe bans, affecting millions, will remain in force. Their position is that the cumulative rainfall deficit requires sustained, above-average precipitation over an extended period to replenish water sources adequately.
The Environment Agency continues to monitor river flows and groundwater levels, noting that several regions, particularly in the South East and South West of England, show
a substantial shortfall from typical seasonal averages. This indicates that superficial wetting from recent showers is not penetrating sufficiently to address the deeper hydrological imbalances.
