EuroMillions Winner Anthony Canty Died From Traumatic Brain Injury After Tiptree Collision
Anthony Canty, the 39-year-old EuroMillions winner, sustained a fatal traumatic brain injury when he was knocked off his bicycle in Tiptree, Essex, a coroner confirmed. Mr Canty died in hospital on 25 May, four days after the collision occurred on 21 May at approximately 06:30 BST.
An 18-year-old driver of a Ford KA was arrested in connection with the incident and remains under police investigation. Area Coroner Michelle Brown has suspended the inquest in Chelmsford for four months to allow detectives to continue their inquiries into Mr Canty's death.
Mr Canty, a father-of-two from Tiptree, gained public attention when he secured a £1 million EuroMillions jackpot in May 2020. Days prior to his win, he was credited with saving the life of a police officer who collapsed on a bus.
The incident occurred on Maldon Road, near the junction with Braxted Park Road and Grove Park Road, as Mr Canty was cycling towards Great Totham. The provisional cause of death was identified as craniocervical disassociation and a traumatic brain injury.
Essex Police confirmed the Ford driver was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and failing to stop. The individual has since been released under investigation.
