Finland Halts Google Data Centre Construction Amid Forest Clearance Objections
Finnish officials have ordered an immediate halt to preparatory work for two proposed Google data centres, located near the city of Hamina. The decision follows a formal objection lodged with the city, highlighting significant concerns over the planned felling of approximately 100 hectares (247 acres) of forest.
The administrative order, issued by the city of Hamina’s head of supervisory services, mandates an immediate cessation of all construction and clearance activities at the sites. Google had commenced preliminary work earlier this month, having secured a building permit in May for the expansion of its existing data centre operations in the region.
The current objection targets the extensive logging necessary for the new facilities, arguing that the environmental assessment process did not adequately address the scale of forest destruction. Google’s ongoing expansion in Finland reflects the global tech industry's increasing demand for energy-intensive infrastructure, often sited in Nordic countries due to cooler climates and abundant renewable energy sources, though not without environmental trade-offs.
