
Fire Engulfs MV Nord Houston at Newport Docks, 1,000 Tonnes of Scrap Metal Aboard
Emergency crews were mobilised to Newport Docks at approximately 05:40 BST on Sunday following reports of a fire aboard the MV Nord Houston. The vessel, carrying 1,000 tonnes of scrap metal, was securely docked when the incident commenced.
Extensive Emergency Response
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) confirmed that a substantial deployment of resources is on scene. Firefighting efforts have concentrated on surrounding the blaze, with operational tactics under continuous review to ensure a safe and timely resolution. Co-ordination is underway with Associated British Ports, harbour authorities, Natural Resources Wales, the police, and Newport Council.
Officials have stated there is no immediate risk to human life or adjacent infrastructure. The primary focus beyond containment is now on mitigating any potential environmental damage caused by the burning cargo. Fire personnel are expected to maintain a presence at the docks while arrangements are made for the safe unloading of any affected material. The public has been advised to avoid the dock area.
