Firefighters Deploy Helicopter as Wildfires Threaten Elan Valley, Wales, Since Sunday
Emergency services have entered their fourth day combating extensive wildfires in the Elan Valley, Powys. The Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service has been addressing blazes around the renowned beauty spot since Sunday.
A helicopter has been deployed to conduct water drops on areas deemed high-risk. National Trust Cymru has confirmed the Hafod Estate's closure to the public as a precautionary measure, remaining shut indefinitely.
Glyndwr Jones, a shepherd residing at Claerwen Dam, described the situation as "quite frightening." He expressed concern for livestock, particularly lambs, across the vast landscape. The full financial implications remain unclear until the fires are extinguished, with Jones estimating between 10,000 and 12,000 acres potentially affected.
Natural Resources Wales (NRW) underscored the critical need for aerial support, citing the significant risk to local ecosystems and the absence of substantial rainfall in the immediate forecast. Richard Preece, NRW's duty tactical manager for Wales, noted that current dry conditions have "significantly increased the fire risk."
In a separate incident, the South West Fire and Rescue Service was simultaneously tackling a wildfire on Cowbridge Common, Vale of Glamorgan, on Wednesday.
