Five Australian Rules Footballers Suspended by Hawthorn Club Over Hotel Incident
Five players from the Hawthorn Australian Rules Football Club have been suspended by their club, following a team trip to Launceston, Tasmania. The suspensions relate to breaches of team rules, specifically drinking alcohol and inviting women back to the team hotel. This disciplinary action coincides with an active police investigation into an alleged sexual assault in Launceston, which reportedly occurred after the team's match against GWS Giants on 16 March.
While Tasmania Police confirmed an investigation into the alleged assault is underway, they have not publicly linked the Hawthorn players to the incident. Club CEO Jarrod Watt stated the players' actions were 'not acceptable' and 'let down the team and the club'. The players involved have been identified as Finn Maginness, Cam Mackenzie, Josh Weddle, Jacob Koschitzke, and Lloyd Meek. They will miss the upcoming match against North Melbourne.
This incident casts a shadow over the club, particularly given the broader context of professional sports organisations grappling with player conduct and accountability. The confluence of rule breaches and an ongoing police inquiry underscores the scrutiny placed upon athletes and the institutions they represent.
