Five Italian Divers Die During Vaavu Atoll Cave Exploration in Maldives
Five Italian divers have died in a scuba diving incident in the Maldives, Italy's foreign ministry confirmed. The group is believed to have perished while attempting to explore caves at a depth of 50 metres in Vaavu Atoll.
Maldivian military personnel located one body approximately 60 metres underwater, with the remaining four divers presumed to be in the same location. Authorities described the recovery operation as 'very high risk', necessitating specialised equipment.
This incident is considered the most severe single diving accident recorded in the Indian Ocean nation, renowned for its coral islands and as a prominent tourist destination. The divers entered the water on Thursday morning and were reported missing when they failed to resurface.
Police noted adverse weather conditions in the area, situated around 100km south of the capital, Malé. A yellow warning for passenger boats and fishermen had been issued. The University of Genoa later identified some of the victims as a marine biology professor, her daughter, and two young researchers, expressing 'deepest condolences'.
While diving and snorkelling accidents are uncommon, several fatalities have occurred in the Maldives in recent years. These include an experienced British diver and a Japanese lawmaker in separate incidents during December and earlier in the year, respectively.
