Aung San Suu Kyi Appears Healthy in First Independent Contact in 30 Months

Aung San Suu Kyi, the former State Counsellor of Myanmar, has been pictured in newly released photographs meeting an International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) official, marking the first confirmed independent contact with her since her arrest over two-and-a-half years ago.

The images, disseminated by the military government, show Ms Suu Kyi, aged 79, in a white blouse and a traditional longyi. She appears healthy and composed during the meeting with ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric Egger.

Since the military coup in February 2021, Ms Suu Kyi has been held in detention, facing a series of politically motivated charges that critics contend are designed to neutralise any political opposition. These charges have led to a 27-year prison sentence, though she has reportedly been moved to house arrest in recent months.

The international community has consistently called for her immediate and unconditional release, alongside thousands of other political prisoners. Western powers have maintained sanctions against the military junta, citing the violent repression of dissent and the undermining of democratic processes, while continuing to prioritise their strategic interests in the region.
