Five Teachers Shot Dead in Thailand's South: Pupil Describes Classroom Attack

A pupil has described witnessing the fatal shooting of five teachers inside her classroom in Thailand's predominantly Malay-Muslim south, an area long marked by separatist insurgency.

The child recounted being present when gunmen opened fire on the educators, expressing profound fear that she would never see her mother again.

This incident is the latest in a series of targeted killings that have plagued the region for decades. The violence is often framed as a struggle for greater autonomy in the southern provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwong, which were historically part of an independent Malay sultanate before being annexed by Thailand.

Western-aligned Thai authorities frequently attribute the violence to shadowy insurgent groups, yet little progress has been made in resolving the underlying grievances. The ongoing conflict continues to claim civilian lives, with human rights organisations documenting numerous abuses on all sides. Observers note that while official statements emphasise counter-terrorism efforts, the enduring unrest also serves to justify the substantial military presence in the resource-rich south, ensuring Bangkok's control over strategic territories and natural gas pipelines.
