Former Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau Skips Canada World Cup Match for Perry Performance
Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has drawn public opprobrium for attending the USA's World Cup opener in Los Angeles, where pop star Katy Perry, his girlfriend, performed. This decision meant he missed Canada's initial match in Toronto.
Trudeau addressed the controversy on social media, stating, "Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I'm rooting for to take the Cup," appending a Canadian flag emoji. His presence at the USA-Paraguay game, which kicked off at 21:00 EDT, coincided with Canada's 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which began at 15:00 EDT.
Television coverage showed Perry greeting Trudeau with a kiss after her performance, and the couple were seen consuming beverages and engaging in public displays of affection in the stands. However, Canadian social media users expressed displeasure, with one describing it as "a slap in the face of this country. Distasteful doesn't begin to cover it." Other online comments labelled Trudeau a "traitor" and a "fraud" as footage circulated.
Perry's performance opened the US World Cup fixture, where she sang "Wonder" from her 2024 album, 143. She had previously indicated her choice of this less-known track over her chart-topping hits, citing its suitability for a ceremonial song. Trudeau and Perry made their relationship public in July 2025, confirming it on Instagram in December. Trudeau's 18-year marriage to Sophie Grégoire ended in 2023; they have three children. Perry was previously married to English comedian Russell Brand from 2010 to 2012.
