Devon County Councillor Sanctioned After Questioning Inclusion of LGBT+ Books in Schools
A Devon County Councillor has faced official sanctions after raising concerns about the presence of LGBT+ themed books in local school libraries. Councillor Frank Biederman, who leads the Reform UK group on the council, was subject to a formal complaint which alleged his comments constituted a breach of conduct. The complaint was ultimately upheld.
The sanctions imposed on Councillor Biederman include a temporary prohibition from sitting on any council committees or representing the council on external bodies. This measure is in effect for a period of six months.
Councillor Biederman publicly defended his actions, stating that he believes it was important to vocalise his concerns regarding the content of books available to schoolchildren. He has maintained that his motivation was not to discriminate but to address what he perceived as issues of age appropriateness within educational materials.
The council's decision to sanction Councillor Biederman follows a period of deliberation over the nature of his remarks and their compliance with established codes of conduct for elected officials.
