Former John Lewis Boss Andy Street Advocates Workplace Sickness Reduction for UK Economic Growth
Andy Street, the current West Midlands Mayor and former head of John Lewis, has asserted that a significant reduction in workplace sickness absence is essential for stimulating economic growth across the United Kingdom. Street’s initiative, dubbed the 'Get Britain Working' taskforce, has garnered support from over 250 of the nation’s largest employers.
The taskforce aims to tackle the issue of 2.8 million people currently reported as being out of work due to long-term sickness, a figure Street describes as a "tragedy" and a substantial barrier to national productivity. He argues that addressing this challenge is not merely a humanitarian concern but a pragmatic economic imperative, suggesting that a healthier workforce would directly translate into increased output and prosperity.
Street highlighted that the current level of economic inactivity due to sickness represents a drain on the public purse and a missed opportunity for businesses struggling with labour shortages. The 'Get Britain Working' programme seeks to implement strategies that could reintegrate these individuals into employment, thereby boosting the UK's productive capacity.
