Former Officer Ordered to Repay £1.8 Million in Seized Bitcoin Theft

A former police officer has been ordered to repay £1.8 million after converting Bitcoin seized during an investigation for personal gain. Paul Chowles, 38, from Bristol, stole the cryptocurrency that had been confiscated in connection with a dark web marketplace probe.

Chowles was previously jailed for four years and nine months in 2023 for the theft. The confiscation order, issued under the Proceeds of Crime Act, mandates the repayment of the substantial sum, reflecting the value of the illicitly obtained digital assets.

The investigation uncovered that Chowles exploited his position to divert the seized Bitcoin into his own accounts. This case underscores the challenges authorities face in securing digital assets and the persistent risk of corruption within institutions tasked with upholding the law, particularly when dealing with high-value, easily transferable cryptocurrencies.
