Former Sheffield Nine O'Clock Service Leader Found Guilty of Rape and Assault
Christopher Brain, 67, the former charismatic leader of Sheffield's Nine O'Clock Service, has been found guilty of multiple counts of rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault. The convictions, delivered by a jury at Sheffield Crown Court, pertain to the abuse of 13 women spanning a period between 1980 and 1995. Brain faces a custodial sentence following the verdict.
The Nine O'Clock Service, a religious organisation active in Sheffield during the 1980s and 1990s, gained notoriety for its blend of rave culture and Christian worship. Prosecutors detailed how Brain leveraged his significant influence and position within the group to prey on vulnerable women, coercing them into sexual acts. The trial brought to light the systematic nature of his abuse, which occurred over many years.
Brain was acquitted of two further counts of indecent assault. Following the jury's decision, he was remanded in custody. A sentencing date is yet to be announced. This outcome brings a degree of justice for the survivors of the long-standing abuse within the controversial movement.
