HMS Agamemnon, Sixth Astute-Class Submarine, Arrives at Faslane for Sea Trials
The Royal Navy’s sixth Astute-class submarine, HMS Agamemnon, has arrived at HM Naval Base Faslane in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Its arrival signals the commencement of extensive sea trials, a critical period during which its systems and performance will be rigorously tested.
These trials are a standard procedure for new naval vessels, ensuring all components function as designed before the submarine is officially commissioned and integrated into the fleet. The Astute class, built by BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, are the largest and most advanced attack submarines ever constructed for the Royal Navy.
Each submarine in the class is capable of deploying both Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles and Spearfish heavy torpedoes. Their primary roles include intelligence gathering, surveillance, and engagement with enemy targets. The Astute programme underscores the UK's commitment to projecting naval power, aligning with broader Western strategic interests in maintaining global maritime presence.
