Former White House Employee Ordered to Pay $172,000 for Trump Speech Wagering
David M. Patten, who previously operated teleprompters for the White House, has been mandated to pay $172,000 following an investigation into his online betting activities. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) found that Mr. Patten leveraged his privileged access to upcoming presidential speeches to place bets on political prediction markets.
The regulator stated Mr. Patten’s actions constituted a violation of its rules, specifically by using confidential information for financial benefit. His bets included wagers on the timing of announcements related to the Special Counsel Robert Mueller investigation and the inclusion of specific phrases or policy positions in Donald Trump’s public addresses.
Mr. Patten’s betting scheme reportedly generated profits by capitalising on his foreknowledge of presidential rhetoric and declarations. This ruling underscores regulatory concerns regarding the exploitation of non-public information, even in non-traditional financial markets.
