Fraser Garden Jailed for Killing Pensioner John Bell in Stolen Maserati Crash
A banned driver has received a 12-year prison sentence following a fatal collision in Broughty Ferry, Scotland. Fraser Garden, 34, was driving a stolen Maserati at speeds of up to 88mph in a 30mph zone when he lost control of the vehicle.
The car mounted the pavement and struck 81-year-old John Bell, who was tending to his garden in September 2022. Mr Bell sustained severe injuries and died at the scene.
Dundee High Court heard that Garden, from Dundee, had been disqualified from driving for three years just weeks before the incident. He was also under the influence of cannabis at the time of the crash.
Advocate Depute Lindsey Farmer stated that Garden made no attempt to brake before the impact. He then fled the scene on foot, leaving Mr Bell to die. He was apprehended by police a short time later.
Lord Arthurson, in delivering the sentence, described Garden's actions as "despicable" and highlighted his extensive history of driving offences. Garden pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and other motoring offences. He will also face an additional lifetime driving ban upon his release.
