Funeral Director Gail Stiff Accused of Abandoning Bodies at Hull Firm
Gail Stiff, 52, co-owner of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, is currently on bail as police investigations continue into her alleged abandonment of deceased individuals and the subsequent failure to deliver contracted funeral services. Hull Crown Court was apprised of the disturbing conditions found at the company's Hull and East Riding premises.
Humberside Police initiated an investigation in March 2024 following multiple complaints regarding the care of deceased persons and financial irregularities at the firm. Authorities have received over 200 reports from concerned families.
During a brief hearing, Stiff's solicitor, Richard Butterfield KC, stated that his client was "horrified" by the allegations. District Judge Mark Oxley granted Stiff conditional bail, instructing her to reside at an address in Beverley and to report to a police station weekly. She is also prohibited from contacting her husband, Robert Stiff, or other specified individuals. The next court appearance is scheduled for 23rd December 2024.
Police have identified 35 individuals whose bodies were reportedly mishandled by the firm. The investigation has also encompassed allegations of fraud related to funeral plans and embalming procedures. Authorities have reassured affected families that all deceased individuals have been respectfully transported to a mortuary in Hull.
