Ghana Police Detain Seven Individuals for 'Money Bouquet' Currency Misuse
Ghanaian police have detained seven individuals in connection with the creation of 'money bouquets', decorative arrangements constructed from Cedi banknotes. The arrests underscore a concerted effort by the Bank of Ghana and law enforcement agencies to curb practices perceived as desecrating the national currency.
Authorities contend that these arrangements, often used for celebratory occasions, constitute a misuse and abuse of the Cedi. The Bank of Ghana has previously issued stern warnings against such activities, alongside other practices like spraying banknotes at events or trampling on them.
The central bank's stance is rooted in a broader campaign to maintain the dignity and value of the Cedi. Officials argue that these informal uses undermine the currency's economic standing and public respect. The seven individuals now face charges related to the improper handling of legal tender, signalling a sustained enforcement drive against perceived currency violations across the country.
