Glasgow School of Art Unable to Fund Mackintosh Building Restoration After Fires

The Glasgow School of Art has acknowledged it lacks the financial capacity to reconstruct the fire-ravaged Charles Rennie Mackintosh building. This admission marks a significant departure from previous assurances that the institution was committed to a faithful reinstatement of the iconic structure.

The Mackintosh building, a Grade A listed monument, suffered extensive damage in two separate fires, occurring in 2014 and 2018. The latter incident proved particularly devastating, destroying much of what remained after the initial blaze.

Despite the institution's prior insistence on a full restoration, a recent statement from the school confirmed that "a full like-for-like reinstatement is not financially viable". The estimated costs for such a project are understood to be prohibitive, placing an insurmountable burden on the art school's resources. This development leaves the future of the Mackintosh building uncertain, raising questions about the preservation of one of Scotland's most celebrated architectural contributions.
