Glasgow Woman Jailed 16 Months for Smuggling 17kg Cannabis at Edinburgh Airport
An aspiring social media influencer from Glasgow has been sentenced to 16 months in prison after admitting to smuggling 17kg of cannabis through Edinburgh Airport. Ellie Crampsie, 23, was apprehended in April last year following her return from a holiday in Thailand.
Ms Crampsie, who maintains a presence on Instagram and TikTok, informed Edinburgh Sheriff Court that her former boyfriend had compelled her to transport the Class B drug. The estimated street value of the cannabis ranged from GBP#115,000 to GBP#151,000.
Sheriff Graeme Watson acknowledged Ms Crampsie had been “naive and potentially taken advantage of”, noting a power imbalance within her relationship with the ex-partner, who she knew had drug involvement. However, he deemed her actions reckless, necessitating a custodial sentence despite her lesser culpability.
Border control officers intercepted Ms Crampsie upon her arrival on an Air France flight that originated in Thailand, with a layover in Paris. The suitcase, which she claimed belonged to her ex-boyfriend, contained the substantial quantity of cannabis alongside female clothing.
Her lawyer, Michael Poggi, argued that Ms Crampsie’s role was minor and that a “much older person” exerted a “controlling influence” over her, providing evidence of pressure from others.
