Government Commits £1.3 Billion Public Funds to Universal UK Resort Infrastructure in Bedfordshire
The government has announced a £1.3 billion investment in infrastructure to facilitate the planned Universal United Kingdom Resort in Bedfordshire. Chancellor Rachel Reeves stated the development would generate 28,000 jobs and stimulate nearly £50 billion of economic growth by the resort's projected opening in 2031.
Of the allocated funds, £474 million from the Department for Transport will finance upgrades to the A421 and the expansion of the Wixams railway station. Universal has specified a need for a new A421 junction for direct resort access, while the Wixams station will be enlarged from a two-platform to a four-platform facility to accommodate increased visitor traffic. Further connectivity is anticipated via Stewartby, with four trains per hour to Oxford planned by the early 2030s on the East West Rail line.
Additionally, a £400 million grant will be provided through the Regional Growth Fund, alongside a £438 million grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport for "new community infrastructure." Both grants are contingent upon Universal's completion of infrastructure and the resort's opening.
Reeves emphasised Universal's £6 billion private investment as a "big vote of confidence" in the UK, arguing government support unlocks this private capital, boosting employment and the national economy. She highlighted the UK as Universal's chosen location for its first European theme park, noting 33,000 expressions of interest in employment already received.
However, local businesses have voiced concerns. Brendan Flynn, owner of The Kiln coffee shop in Stewartby, expressed worry that large chains would overshadow local establishments, while co-owner Rebecca Burnage questioned whether the investment would genuinely benefit small businesses. Bedford Borough Conservative Mayor Tom Wootton lauded the investment for its "lasting legacy," citing potential for apprenticeships, skills development, and new jobs in various sectors.
