Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham Defends Gogglebox Appearance Amid Cabinet Minister Criticism
Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has dismissed criticism regarding his recent appearance on the Channel 4 programme 'Gogglebox', a move which prompted a public rebuke from a senior Conservative minister.
Mr Burnham featured in a celebrity edition of the popular show, broadcast as part of Channel 4's 'Stand Up To Cancer' fundraising drive. He stated he 'makes no apology' for his involvement, emphasising the charitable nature of the initiative.
Kemi Badenoch, the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, publicly criticised Mr Burnham's participation, expressing her 'amazement' that he had time for such activities. Speaking on LBC Radio, Ms Badenoch suggested that Greater Manchester residents might prefer their mayor to focus solely on his official duties, particularly given the ongoing challenges faced by the region.
The Mayor, however, countered Ms Badenoch's remarks, describing them as 'cheap shots' and 'pretty poor'. He highlighted the significant funds raised by the 'Gogglebox' special for cancer research, framing his appearance as a contribution to a worthy cause rather than a distraction from his mayoral responsibilities.
