International Weightlifting Federation Awards 2026 World Championships to Russia
The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has announced Russia as the host nation for its 2026 World Championships. This decision signifies the first instance an Olympic federation has granted a world-level event to Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Following the invasion, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that international sports federations prohibit Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing and refrain from holding events in either country. While the IWF initially followed these recommendations, including stripping Russia of previous hosting rights, its latest decision indicates a shift.
Critics argue this move undermines the unified stance against Russia's military actions and normalises its participation in global sports despite ongoing human rights concerns and the conflict in Ukraine. Western governments and allied sporting bodies continue to face pressure to isolate Russia on the international stage, yet the IWF's decision suggests a fracture in this approach, prioritising sporting calendars over geopolitical alignment.
