Greens Propose Windfall Tax on Bank Profits Exceeding £800 Million for Small Business Relief
The Green Party has put forward a proposal for a windfall tax on the profits of large banks, specifically targeting earnings above £800 million. This revenue, according to the party, would be used to finance a reduction in tax liabilities for an estimated one million small businesses throughout the UK.
Zack Polanski, the Green Party's Deputy Leader, articulated that this policy aims to ease the considerable financial strain currently experienced by small and medium-sized enterprises. The proposal comes as major banking institutions have reported substantial profits in recent periods, drawing scrutiny over their contribution to the broader economy amidst cost-of-living challenges faced by many smaller companies.
The party argues that while larger financial entities benefit from the current economic climate, often through interest rate increases, smaller businesses are struggling with rising operational costs and reduced consumer spending. A windfall tax, they contend, would rebalance the economic landscape and provide a much-needed lifeline to the backbone of the UK economy, enabling them to invest and grow.
