Greggs Installs Secure Counters in Croydon, Peckham, Whitechapel Shops Amid Shoplifting Surge
Greggs is implementing secure counters in its most affected London outlets, including branches in Croydon, Peckham, Whitechapel, and Upton Park. This measure is also being trialled in Birmingham and Wilford, Nottinghamshire, in response to a notable rise in retail crime.
Official statistics reveal that shoplifting incidents in England and Wales surpassed 500,000 last year, marking an approximate 20% increase over the previous year. This surge has prompted considerable concern across the retail sector.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the wave of retail crime as "disgraceful," pledging to introduce a new offence specifically addressing assaults on retail workers. The government has also announced an additional 3,000 neighbourhood police officers and removed the informal threshold that previously limited prosecutions for thefts valued under GBP#200.
Retailers, however, are not solely relying on policy changes. Greggs has replaced its open cabinets with secure counters in stores experiencing high levels of antisocial behaviour. The company is also piloting software to directly share incident data with local police, aiming to expedite reporting and response times.
Other chains are adopting different strategies, with reports indicating that Pret A Manger and Costa are employing security personnel to deter repeat offenders. Greggs stated that these trials are targeted, temporary, and are being assessed for their impact on theft reduction and customer experience.
