Haakon VIII Ascends Norwegian Throne, Commits to Unity and Constitutional Duty

King Haakon VIII formally acceded to the Norwegian throne, delivering his first address from the Royal Palace in Oslo. He paid tribute to his father, the late Harald V, stating, "My father was a king for the whole country, and so will I be." This follows Harald V's passing at the age of 87, after a prolonged period of declining health.

The new King outlined his vision for his reign, vowing to maintain the unifying role of the monarchy while upholding Norway's constitutional framework. "My task is to unite, to guide, and to serve," Haakon VIII declared, pledging to listen to the voices of the nation's diverse communities. He also acknowledged the solemnity of assuming the throne, noting, "It is with a heavy heart that I take on this responsibility, but also with great resolve."
