High-Speed Train Driver Dies in Collision with Lorry in Northern France
Fatal Collision at Level Crossing
A driver of a French high-speed TGV train has been confirmed dead following a collision with a lorry at a level crossing in the Pas-de-Calais region. The incident, which took place on Tuesday morning, involved a train travelling from Dunkirk to Paris.
Regional President Xavier Bertrand expressed his condolences, describing the loss as a "terrible tragedy." French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot and the head of France's state-owned rail operator SNCF are attending the scene.
Injuries and Investigation
Beyond the driver's fatality, two individuals are reported to be in a critical condition, with a further eleven sustaining minor injuries. Reports indicate the heavy goods vehicle was transporting military equipment at the time of the collision, which occurred shortly before 07:00 local time.
The regional rail network, TER Hauts-de-France, has confirmed significant disruption to services between Béthune and Lens. The rail union SUD-Rail has called for "total transparency" regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Broader Context of Rail Safety
This tragic event follows another fatal collision involving a regional train and a truck in the Var region less than a fortnight ago. While collisions at level crossings are relatively rare in France, official figures highlight a higher incidence compared to the UK. In 2024, France has recorded 89 such incidents resulting in 20 fatalities, in contrast to six in the UK. Over 100 collisions were reported annually in France between 2021 and 2023.
