Hinckley Railway Bridge Struck Twice in Two Days, Disrupting Road and Rail Services
Hinckley Road in Leicestershire was closed following two distinct collisions involving the local railway bridge. Known for its susceptibility to vehicle impacts, the bridge registered its 33rd and 34th strike since 2020 on consecutive days, Saturday and Sunday.
Leicestershire Police confirmed the road's closure due to a "road traffic collision" on Sunday, while Network Rail indicated that the initial incident on Saturday resulted in a vehicle striking the bridge. No injuries were reported in either event, but the repeated damage underscores the operational challenges posed by inadequate vehicle clearance.
Network Rail data from 2022-23 designated the Hinckley Road bridge as the most frequently struck railway bridge in the UK, experiencing 24 impacts during that period. Despite signage and public awareness campaigns, the recurring damage leads to considerable disruption for both road users and railway passengers, often necessitating costly inspections and repairs.
Motorists are advised to heed height restriction warnings to prevent further incidents that divert emergency services and impede vital transport links.
