Hospital Trust Accepts Full Liability for 24 Failures Leading to Toddler Eleanor Aldred-Owen's Death
Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board has accepted full liability for the tragic death of Eleanor Aldred-Owen, a 20-month-old who died after surgery in 2022. The admission encompasses 24 separate failings in her care.
Eleanor's family, from Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, stated that the health board's acknowledgement of responsibility was a critical step, but emphasised that the systemic issues persist. The infant died on 25 February 2022, following an operation to remove her appendix at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taf. Despite the operation itself being successful, an earlier abdominal scan revealing an abnormality was not appropriately escalated or addressed.
The family's legal representation confirmed the health board's admission of liability, highlighting a catalogue of errors in the toddler's medical treatment. This case underscores severe deficiencies in patient care protocols and communication within the institution, leaving serious questions about oversight and accountability.
