Yorkshire Water Chief Executive Nicola Shaw Resigns Following Regulator Downgrade
Nicola Shaw, the Chief Executive of Yorkshire Water, is set to resign in January 2025, a move that comes two years into her tenure. Her departure follows the recent regulatory downgrade of the utility company by Ofwat, the water services regulation authority.
Ofwat's assessment highlighted significant failings in Yorkshire Water's operational performance, specifically citing poor environmental management and substandard customer service. This downgrade places the company under heightened scrutiny and potentially impacts its financial planning and future investment capabilities.
Shaw, who previously held senior roles at HS2 and Network Rail, joined Yorkshire Water in 2022. Her resignation raises questions regarding accountability within the privatised water sector, particularly as public discontent over infrastructure failures and environmental degradation continues to mount across the UK.
Yorkshire Water is one of several utility companies facing intense criticism for its handling of sewage discharges and its overall track record on environmental protection. The company's financial practices and executive remuneration packages have also come under increased public and political examination amidst these operational challenges.
