Households Offered Free Electricity for Off-Peak Appliance Use
Households and businesses in the UK could soon benefit from free or cheaper electricity by adjusting their consumption habits. Under an updated Demand Flexibility Service approved by Ofgem, energy suppliers can now incentivise customers to increase electricity usage during times of abundant supply, such as sunny weekends or Bank Holidays, when renewable energy generation is high and overall demand is low.
Utilising Green Energy Surplus
This initiative, spearheaded by the National Energy System Operator (NESO), seeks to capitalise on the growing prevalence of surplus electricity. Summer months, with their warmer weather and longer days, coupled with increased solar power generation and a rise in smaller, local electricity generators, are leading to more frequent periods of excess supply. Rewarding customers for using appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, and electric vehicle chargers during these times will help prevent the wastage of green energy.
How the Scheme Works
The updated scheme is accessible to households equipped with smart meters and whose energy suppliers are participating. Rewards will be at the discretion of individual suppliers and could manifest as free or cheaper electricity tariffs during specific hours, or loyalty points convertible into gift cards. British Gas, Equiwatt, and Octopus Energy are among the initial companies to have signed up.
NESO highlighted the increasing complexity of managing the national grid during periods of low demand, stating that more tools, and their more frequent application, may be necessary. This includes potentially instructing power stations to reduce their output to maintain system safety. The scheme underscores a proactive approach to optimising energy distribution and promoting sustainable consumption patterns across the country.
