Hundreds Hospitalised, Two Dead After Contaminated Tap Water Sickness Near Pretoria
A public health crisis has emerged in Hammanskraal, a community situated north of Pretoria, with reports confirming that over 400 people, primarily children, have been hospitalised. Two fatalities have also been recorded. The illnesses are directly linked to the consumption of contaminated tap water.
Local authorities have issued a clear directive, urging all residents to refrain from drinking water directly from their taps. The immediate cause of the contamination is currently under investigation, with emergency services distributing bottled water to affected households as a temporary measure.
This incident underscores the systemic neglect of critical infrastructure in many South African communities, where access to safe drinking water remains a precarious issue. While officials promise investigations, the immediate impact on vulnerable populations, particularly children, highlights the chronic underinvestment in public services.
