Hundreds of Fans Stranded at World Cup Gates After StubHub Cancels Tickets
Hundreds of football fans have reported being denied entry to World Cup matches after tickets acquired via resale platform StubHub were cancelled, often at the stadium entrance. Many supporters had travelled internationally and spent thousands of pounds on travel and accommodation, only to be left stranded with invalid tickets.
One fan, who invested $6,000 in a trip, recounted being turned away from a Group D match after receiving last-minute cancellation notifications. Another individual, having purchased tickets for the semi-final, was also refused entry. These incidents highlight a significant issue with the reliability of secondary ticketing markets, particularly for high-profile international events.
StubHub maintains that all affected customers will receive a full refund and a 200% coupon for future purchases, citing 'unforeseen fulfilment issues' as the cause of the cancellations. However, this retrospective compensation does little to alleviate the immediate disruption and financial loss incurred by fans who made extensive travel arrangements based on their ticket purchases. The repeated failure of such platforms to guarantee entry raises serious questions about consumer protection in the global event ticketing industry.
