Hundreds of Football Supporters Stranded as StubHub Cancels World Cup Tickets
Hundreds of football supporters travelling to the current World Cup tournament have reported that tickets purchased through the resale website StubHub were cancelled at the last minute. Fans, some having travelled thousands of miles, arrived in the host nation only to find their entry invalid, with many holding screenshots and email confirmations of their purchases.
This marks a repeat of issues seen during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where StubHub customers faced identical problems. At that time, many affected individuals were forced to buy new tickets at inflated prices directly from official sources to attend matches.
Reports indicate that StubHub has initiated refunds for some cancelled tickets, but this does not cover the substantial travel and accommodation costs incurred by fans who made arrangements based on their ticket purchases. The company has yet to issue a comprehensive public statement regarding the widespread cancellations.
The plight of these fans underscores the opaque nature of secondary ticketing markets and the lack of robust consumer protections for international sporting events. Many are now left out of pocket, unable to attend games, and without clear recourse for their substantial expenditures beyond the face value of the tickets.
