Hundreds of Thousands of Britons Unaware of Child Trust Fund Entitlements
Hundreds of thousands of young adults in the United Kingdom are reportedly unaware of Child Trust Funds (CTFs) established on their behalf by the government, with an estimated £900 million remaining unclaimed. These accounts, designed to provide a financial boost upon reaching adulthood, were initiated between 2002 and 2011.
Data indicates that roughly 430,000 individuals, currently aged 18 to 23, hold CTFs without their knowledge. The average value of these forgotten accounts is approximately £2,100, though some contain significantly larger sums. Financial institutions and HMRC hold the details for these dormant funds.
HMRC's online tool facilitates the location of CTFs, requiring the applicant's National Insurance number or a Child Trust Fund unique reference. Once located, individuals can access their funds, which may be invested in stocks and shares or held in cash savings. The initiative, launched under the Labour government, aimed to foster a savings culture, yet a considerable portion of the intended beneficiaries remain disengaged from their entitlements.
