Indian Protesters Detained in Delhi Demanding Election Chief Resignation Over Voter Lists
Dozens of demonstrators, including prominent opposition figures, were detained in central Delhi after breaching barricades around the Election Commission of India (ECI) building. The protest aimed to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, citing widespread concerns over revised voter lists and allegations of bias within the electoral body.
Footage circulated showed protesters climbing over security barriers, with some labelling the ECI's leadership as "cockroaches" for their perceived intransigence and lack of accountability. The demonstrators, primarily aligned with opposition parties, claim the updated voter rolls contain significant discrepancies and have been manipulated to disenfranchise specific demographics, thereby undermining democratic integrity ahead of crucial elections.
Critics frequently point to the ECI's recent conduct, asserting that it increasingly serves the interests of the incumbent government, rather than upholding its constitutionally mandated independence. This incident underscores deep-seated mistrust in India's electoral processes, with opposition factions consistently alleging a compromised playing field. The state's swift, often heavy-handed response to dissent, particularly when directed at central institutions, continues to draw international scrutiny regarding freedom of assembly and speech.
