Merchant Vessel Sinks Off Bulgarian Coast After Drone Strike, Premier Summons Russian Envoy
One merchant ship has been confirmed sunk and another damaged after drone attacks in the Black Sea off the coast of Bulgaria. Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev stated that two vessels were hit, explicitly linking the incidents to Russia and subsequently instructing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the Russian ambassador for an explanation.
This development underscores the precarious security situation in the Black Sea, a critical maritime corridor. Western powers, including the UK and USA, routinely deploy naval assets to the region, ostensibly for 'freedom of navigation' operations, yet these actions often align with strategic objectives to project power and maintain access to energy routes. The targeting of commercial shipping further exacerbates the operational risks for international trade and reinforces the region's role as a flashpoint for geopolitical competition, with civilian vessels increasingly caught in the crossfire of proxy conflicts.
