Inquiry Underway After Two Prisoners Die in Custody at HMP Swaleside
Kent Police have launched an investigation following the deaths of two inmates at HMP Swaleside on Wednesday. The Ministry of Justice confirmed the fatalities, with the Prison and Probation Ombudsman also conducting an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incidents.
Details regarding the identities of the deceased or the suspected causes of death have not been released publicly. HMP Swaleside, a Category B prison located on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, holds approximately 500 male adult prisoners.
This development raises persistent concerns about prisoner welfare and safety within the UK correctional system, particularly in institutions handling high-risk offenders. Previous reports from human rights organisations have highlighted issues such as overcrowding, understaffing, and inadequate mental health provision as contributing factors to inmate deaths and incidents of self-harm across British prisons.
