Iran Condemns US Strikes in Hormozgan as Ceasefire Violation, Blames Washington
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it conducted "self-defence strikes" against Iranian missile sites and boats allegedly attempting to place mines in southern Iran. This action has prompted a strong condemnation from Iran, which asserted that the strikes constitute a "gross violation" of the current ceasefire agreement between the two nations.
Iran's foreign ministry declared that it holds the United States accountable for any repercussions stemming from its "aggressive and unjustified actions" in the Hormozgan region. This area, which possesses a coastline along the Strait of Hormuz, is strategically vital, with Iran having previously obstructed this crucial shipping lane. Such obstruction has been a factor in the surge in global energy prices.
The potential ramifications of these strikes on ongoing negotiations aimed at de-escalating the conflict remain unclear. A statement from Tehran affirmed, "Without a doubt, the Islamic Republic of Iran will not leave any evil unanswered and will not hesitate to defend the Iranian nation."
However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that a resolution from the talks remains achievable, albeit requiring "a few days". A significant reported obstacle in these discussions involves Tehran's demand for the unfreezing of Iranian funds held internationally. While Pakistan has largely mediated the talks, Iranian negotiators have participated in discussions held in Qatar this week.
An official with knowledge of the Doha meetings informed Reuters that Iran's central bank governor was present at Monday's discussions, specifically to address the frozen assets. The talks also reportedly focused on Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Since the conflict initiated by the United States and Israel on 28 February, Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil transits. Western governments, including the US and Israel, have consistently accused Iran of enriching uranium for military purposes, a claim Iran denies, stating its nuclear programme is exclusively for peaceful applications.
