Jakarta Commuter Train Collision Kills Four, Injures Dozens Near Bekasi Timur Station
At least four individuals have died and dozens sustained injuries following a train collision near Jakarta, Indonesia, on Monday. A stationary commuter train was reportedly struck from behind by an arriving long-distance service on the same track.
Officials confirmed the deaths, with Anne Purba, a spokesperson for state-owned railway operator KAI, stating that 38 people were transported to local hospitals. Purba conveyed KAI's "deepest condolences" to the victims and their families. The Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, who visited the site approximately 25km (15.5 miles) from Jakarta, indicated the casualty count could increase. Jakarta Police Chief Insp Gen Asep Edi Suheri reported that six or seven individuals remained trapped within the carriages.
Eyewitness accounts described passengers screaming as the trains collided, with many victims observed injured in the aftermath. Footage broadcast on local media displayed passengers on medical trolleys near Bekasi Timur Station and rescuers attempting to free individuals from the wreckage.
Indonesia's public transport infrastructure, often characterised by ageing systems and inadequate maintenance, has a documented history of accidents. This incident follows a similar collision in January 2024 in Cicalengka, which also resulted in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries.
