Nigerian President Tinubu Approves 80% Pay Rise for Junior Military Personnel
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an 80% salary increase for junior non-commissioned officers and other lower ranks in the Nigerian military. The presidential directive stipulates that the pay rise will apply to all military personnel below the officer corps. This decision comes after years of advocacy from various military groups and defence analysts who have highlighted the disparity in pay scales and the impact on troop morale and effectiveness.
Nigeria's military faces ongoing operations against Boko Haram and Islamic State-affiliated groups in the North East, widespread banditry and kidnapping in the North West and North Central regions, and separatist movements in the South East. Improving the welfare of soldiers is a stated priority for the Tinubu administration, which inherited a complex security landscape.
