Jane Dodds Resigns Welsh Liberal Democrats Leadership After Nine Years
Jane Dodds has announced her resignation as leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, stating it is time for a 'new generation' to take the helm. Ms Dodds, who has led the party for nearly a decade, will remain a Member of the Senedd for Mid and West Wales until the next Senedd election in 2026.
Her tenure saw the party secure one Senedd seat in the 2021 election, which she currently holds. The Welsh Liberal Democrats have not held any Westminster seats since 2017.
Ms Dodds was elected leader in November 2017, succeeding Kirsty Williams. She briefly served as a Member of Parliament for Brecon and Radnorshire after winning a by-election in August 2019, but lost the seat in the subsequent December general election.
A timetable for electing her successor is expected to be announced in due course.
