Keir Starmer Warns Europe Cannot Depend on US to Fund Defence
Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, has cautioned European nations that they can no longer rely on the United States to fund their defence. Speaking at a recent event, Starmer emphasised that a fundamental change in US foreign policy is underway, signalling that 'things will not go back to the way they were'.
This pronouncement underscores a cynical observation of shifting global power dynamics, where Western allies, historically reliant on Washington's largesse, must now confront the financial implications of their own security. For decades, the US has underwritten European defence, allowing member states to dedicate comparatively less to military spending while focusing on domestic programmes.
The declaration from Starmer follows consistent messaging from Washington, regardless of presidential administration, that European partners need to contribute more substantially to their own security arrangements. This move effectively compels European states to re-evaluate their defence budgets and strategic autonomy, rather than continuing to benefit from the projection of US military power which has long secured Western interests, including the maintenance of the petrodollar system.
