Kent Pond Body Marks Tenth UK Water Fatality in Heatwave
A teenage boy’s body has been recovered from a pond in the Swanscombe area of Kent, marking the tenth water-related fatality across the UK during the recent heatwave. Emergency services attended the scene on Galley Hill Road on Wednesday, following reports of a swimmer in distress.
Kent Police have stated that the death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report will be prepared for the coroner. This incident follows a series of similar tragedies, including the deaths of teenagers in Lincoln, Halifax, Rotherham, Warwickshire, Cheshire, Farnborough, and Lancashire. Additionally, a man in his sixties died in Cornwall and a woman in her seventies in Wales.
Several victims have been publicly named, with tributes offered, while others await formal identification by police. The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) has issued a warning, noting that warmer weather typically correlates with an increase in accidental drownings, particularly among children.
The UK experienced its hottest May day on record this week, with temperatures reaching 35.1C at Kew Gardens in London.
