Kian Bateman, 19, Guilty of Shelley Davies Murder After Cardiff Club Collision on 27 September
A teenager has been found guilty of murder after driving into a woman outside the 4th Glamorgan Homeguard Club in Caerau, Cardiff, on 27 September last year. Kian Bateman, 19, deliberately struck Shelley Davies, 38, and her partner David Bratcher, 40, causing severe injuries. Ms Davies succumbed to her injuries three weeks later in hospital.
Cardiff Crown Court heard that Bateman drove at the couple following an altercation between Mr Bratcher and Bateman's brother, Kai. Bateman's aunt, Louise, was also hit by the vehicle. Ms Davies sustained numerous fractures, including to her ribs, arm, pelvis, and hip, and developed multiple infections, ultimately leading to septic shock.
Bateman admitted to inhaling nitrous oxide that evening but denied it influenced his aggression. While accepting he caused Ms Davies's death, the prosecution aimed to prove he intended to cause serious injury. Bateman claimed he was surrounded by people and feared an assault, driving away without knowledge of hitting anyone. However, CCTV footage presented by prosecution barrister Michael Jones KC contradicted his account of being surrounded.
Bateman, from Heol Muston in Ely, was convicted of Ms Davies's murder and of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Mr Bratcher. He was acquitted of Mr Bratcher's attempted murder. Bateman, who did not stop or seek help after abandoning the Seat Ibiza, is scheduled for sentencing on 3 July.
