Kian Bateman Jailed for Manslaughter After Using Car to Kill Shelley Davies
Kian Bateman, 18, has been sentenced to 15 years in a young offender institution for the manslaughter of Shelley Davies. Bateman used his vehicle as a weapon, striking Ms Davies, a 49-year-old mother-of-three, and her partner in a cul-de-sac in February 2023. Ms Davies succumbed to her injuries three weeks later.
The court heard that Bateman was under the influence of nitrous oxide at the time of the fatal incident. He had consumed large quantities of the substance before getting behind the wheel.
Ms Davies' partner sustained significant injuries, including a fractured sternum, ribs, and ankle, necessitating extensive medical treatment and a period of reliance on a wheelchair.
Judge Michael Slater, presiding over the case, emphasised the grave consequences of Bateman's actions, noting his impairment from drug use and the deliberate nature of driving at the victims. The sentencing reflects the severe impact on Ms Davies' family and the danger posed by impaired driving.
