King Charles III, Queen Camilla to Visit Aberfan, Mark 60th Disaster Anniversary
King Charles III and Queen Camilla will attend a commemorative event in Aberfan, Wales, marking 60 years since the devastating colliery spoil tip collapse. Prince William is also expected to join the visit, which aims to honour the victims and support the community still grappling with the 1966 tragedy.
The disaster, which occurred on 21 October 1966, saw a coal waste tip slide down a mountainside, engulfing Pantglas Junior School and several homes. A total of 144 people died, including 116 children, leaving an indelible mark on Welsh and wider British consciousness.
During their visit, the King and Queen will engage with survivors of the disaster and families who lost loved ones. This occasion reiterates the monarchy's continued connection to the community, following previous visits by Queen Elizabeth II, who was deeply affected by the events and maintained a close relationship with Aberfan throughout her reign.
The memorial provides a moment for national reflection on industrial safety, community resilience, and the long-term impact of such catastrophes on individuals and places.
