Lawyer Mohammad Alias Yousaf Advises Mini-Mart Owner on Avoiding £45,000 Illegal Worker Fine
A solicitor, Mohammad Alias Yousaf, has been captured on camera instructing an undercover reporter, posing as a mini-mart owner, on how to evade substantial fines for employing an individual without valid immigration status. The reporter sought advice regarding a hypothetical scenario involving a worker who presented a fraudulent visa and national insurance number.
Mr Yousaf outlined methods to disclaim knowledge of the worker's undocumented status, suggesting that employers could argue they conducted appropriate checks and were subsequently deceived. He further advised against reporting the individual to authorities, stating, "We don't pay. That's the first thing."
The solicitor detailed procedures for creating a paper trail to suggest due diligence, even after an employer might become aware of an employee's irregular status. This included advising the fictional business owner on how to manage communications if immigration enforcement were to investigate.
