Knifeman Shot Dead After Grand Central Rampage
A knifeman who identified himself as 'Lucifer' was shot and killed by officers after a violent spree at New York City's Grand Central station. The assailant, later identified as 44-year-old Anthony Griffin, attacked three individuals with what was described as a machete, causing panic at the major transport hub.
Details of the Attack
The incident unfolded on a Saturday morning when Mr Griffin entered the subway system in Queens. He then travelled to Grand Central-42 Street station, where he began his assault. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, he initially slashed one person on a platform before moving upstairs to attack two more. The victims included an 84-year-old man and a 65-year-old man, both suffering significant head and face lacerations, with the latter also sustaining an open skull fracture. A 70-year-old woman received cuts to her shoulder. All three victims were taken to hospital, and their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Police Intervention and Aftermath
Transit officers were alerted at approximately 09:40 EDT. Commissioner Tisch reported that Mr Griffin, behaving erratically and repeatedly stating he was 'Lucifer', ignored at least 20 commands to drop his weapon. When he advanced towards officers with the knife extended, one officer discharged his firearm, striking the suspect twice. Life-saving measures were attempted, but Mr Griffin was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.
